R-410A vs R-454B: The 2026 Refrigerant Transition Explained

If you buy or service air-conditioning equipment, 2025–2026 is a turning point. R-410A — the refrigerant that ran residential AC for two decades — is being phased down in favor of lower-GWP A2L refrigerants like R-454B. Here’s what’s actually changing, and what it means when you’re buying refrigerant today.
Why R-410A is being phased down
R-410A is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) blend with a high global-warming potential (GWP) of roughly 2,088. Under the U.S. AIM Act, the EPA is phasing down HFC production and, through its Technology Transitions rule, limiting the refrigerants allowed in new equipment. Starting January 1, 2025, most newly manufactured residential and light-commercial AC systems must use a refrigerant with a GWP at or below 700.
R-410A doesn’t meet that threshold — so manufacturers have moved new systems to A2L refrigerants, chiefly R-454B and R-32.
What is R-454B?
R-454B is an A2L (mildly flammable, low-toxicity) refrigerant blend with a GWP around 466 — roughly 78% lower than R-410A. It delivers performance close to R-410A, which is why major OEMs selected it for next-generation heat pumps and AC systems. Because it’s an A2L, it requires equipment and handling designed for A2L refrigerants.
R-410A vs R-454B at a glance
| Property | R-410A | R-454B |
|---|---|---|
| Type | HFC blend (A1) | HFO/HFC blend (A2L) |
| GWP | ~2,088 | ~466 |
| Flammability | Non-flammable | Mildly flammable (A2L) |
| Used in | Existing AC & heat pumps | New systems (2025+) |
| Still available? | Yes — for service | Yes — growing supply |
What this means when you’re buying
- Servicing an existing system? Buy R-410A. It remains available and legal for topping up and repairing equipment designed for it.
- Working on new 2025+ equipment? You’ll likely need R-454B (or R-32) and A2L-rated tools.
- Stocking up? Prices on phased-down refrigerants tend to rise as supply tightens — many pros buy cylinders or bulk pallets ahead of peak season.

Frequently asked questions
Is R-410A banned in 2025?
No. New AC equipment can no longer be built with R-410A in most cases, but R-410A is still produced and sold to service the huge installed base of existing systems.
Can I use R-454B in an R-410A system?
No. R-454B is an A2L refrigerant and is not a drop-in for R-410A equipment. Systems are designed and rated for a specific refrigerant.
Do I need certification to buy refrigerant?
For stationary HVAC refrigerants, EPA Section 608 technician certification is generally required to purchase. Always follow current EPA rules and local regulations.
Need R-410A or A2L refrigerants?
Factory-sealed cylinders and bulk pallets, shipped fast from the USA.
