Best R-22 Replacement Refrigerants: Drop-In Options Explained

R-22 (HCFC-22) has been phased out — U.S. production and import of new R-22 ended January 1, 2020. If you maintain older air-conditioning or refrigeration equipment, here are the most common R-22 replacement refrigerants and how to choose one.

Why R-22 is gone

R-22 is an ozone-depleting HCFC. Under the Clean Air Act and the Montreal Protocol, its production and import were phased out. Only reclaimed or recycled R-22 remains legally available, and supply is limited and expensive. For most owners, switching to a replacement refrigerant is the practical path.

Important: There is no perfect “drop-in” for R-22. Replacement (“retrofit”) refrigerants usually require an oil change, a system evaluation, and adjustments by a certified technician. Always confirm compatibility with the equipment manufacturer.

Common R-22 replacement refrigerants

R-407C

A long-standing R-22 retrofit for air conditioning. Capacity is close to R-22, but it typically requires changing to POE oil.

R-422B / NU-22B

A popular service replacement designed to work with the existing mineral oil in many systems, which simplifies retrofits.

R-438A (MO99)

Formulated to closely match R-22 performance across AC and refrigeration, often with minimal system changes.

R-407A & R-427A

Blends used for refrigeration and some AC retrofits, chosen for capacity and lower GWP than older options.

How to choose

  • Check the equipment: manufacturer guidance and the system’s design matter more than any single “best” refrigerant.
  • Mind the oil: some replacements work with existing mineral oil; others need POE.
  • Use a certified tech: retrofits should be performed by an EPA 608-certified technician.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still buy R-22?

Only reclaimed/recycled R-22 is available, and supply is limited and costly. New production and import ended in 2020.

Is there a true drop-in replacement for R-22?

Not exactly — replacements are retrofit refrigerants that usually require some system changes. “Drop-in” is used loosely in marketing.

Do I need EPA certification?

Yes — EPA Section 608 certification is generally required to purchase and handle these refrigerants.
