R-134a vs R-1234yf: The Automotive A/C Refrigerant Guide

If you service vehicle air conditioning, you’ve met both refrigerants: R-134a in older cars and R-1234yf in newer ones. Here’s how they differ, which one your vehicle needs, and what to know before you buy.
The automotive refrigerant switch
R-134a (HFC-134a) was the standard mobile A/C refrigerant for decades after R-12 was phased out. But with a GWP around 1,430, it’s being replaced in new vehicles by R-1234yf (HFO-1234yf), which has a GWP under 1. Most new cars sold in recent years use R-1234yf from the factory.
R-134a
Still widely used to service the large number of vehicles built before the switch. Affordable and available in cans, 30 lb cylinders and bulk pallets.
R-1234yf
The low-GWP refrigerant in most newer vehicles. It’s mildly flammable (A2L) and typically costs more than R-134a, but it’s what newer systems are built to use.
R-134a vs R-1234yf at a glance
| Property | R-134a | R-1234yf |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle era | Older models | Newer models |
| GWP | ~1,430 | <1 |
| Flammability | Non-flammable | Mildly flammable (A2L) |
| Typical cost | Lower | Higher |
Which one does my car need?
Check the refrigerant identification label under the hood, or your service manual. Never substitute one refrigerant for the other — it can damage the system and is not compliant.

Frequently asked questions
Can I put R-1234yf in an R-134a car?
No. The systems use different refrigerants, oils and service fittings. Use the refrigerant your vehicle specifies.
Why is R-1234yf more expensive?
It’s a newer low-GWP HFO refrigerant with more complex manufacturing, which raises the price versus R-134a.
Do I need certification for automotive refrigerant?
Under EPA Section 609, shops servicing mobile A/C must use certified technicians. Retail sales of small cans have specific rules — always follow current EPA guidance.
